Is Xero an ERP? No. What Xero covers, what an ERP like NetSuite or Sage Intacct adds, and when to extend Xero instead of replacing it.
No. Xero is accounting software, not an ERP. It runs your general ledger, invoicing, bills and bank reconciliation. It doesn’t run manufacturing, multi-warehouse inventory or group consolidation. Most SaaS and services companies on Xero don’t need an ERP. They need the finance work around Xero automated, which costs a fraction of a NetSuite project and takes weeks rather than months.
An ERP (enterprise resource planning system) runs finance and operations in one database: the ledger, plus inventory, purchasing, manufacturing, projects and often HR. NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central and SAP Business One are the usual candidates for a company moving off Xero.
The two ERPs Xero companies most often evaluate, as each vendor describes itself on its own website (checked October 24, 2026):
Neither lists a price on its product page; both quote on request.
The question is not whether an ERP does more. It does. The question is whether the extra scope solves the problem you actually have.
| What you need | Xero on its own | ERP (e.g. NetSuite) | Xero + ScaleXP |
|---|---|---|---|
| General ledger, invoicing, bills, bank reconciliation | Yes | Yes | Yes (Xero stays your ledger) |
| Revenue recognition schedules and journals | Manual journals | Yes (revenue module) | Yes, deferred and accrued |
| Month-end accruals and prepayments | Manual journals | Yes | Yes, journals prepared automatically and posted to Xero after finance approves them |
| Consolidating several entities | Spreadsheets | Yes | Yes, across Xero, QuickBooks and Zoho Books |
| SaaS metrics (ARR, MRR, NRR, churn) | No | Via reporting or add-ons | Yes, 30+ metrics |
| Invoicing from HubSpot, Salesforce or Pipedrive | Via apps | Via connectors | Yes |
| Board reporting and forecasts | Basic reports | Yes | Yes |
| Multi-warehouse inventory, manufacturing, procurement | Basic tracked inventory | Yes | No: ScaleXP doesn’t do this |
If the last row is your problem, an ERP is probably the right call. If your pain sits in the other rows, it usually isn’t.

NetSuite does far more than ScaleXP. If you need what it does, the cost is justified. But most Xero companies that start an ERP evaluation are trying to fix revenue schedules, a slow close, consolidation in Excel or unreliable SaaS metrics. For those four problems, replacing the ledger is the most expensive way to get the answer.
You need an ERP when operations, not finance reporting, are the bottleneck: stock, manufacturing or procurement that Xero doesn’t run. If the pain is in the finance work, automate around Xero first.
An ERP is probably the right move if:
You need automation around Xero, not a new ledger, if:
Keep Xero as your ledger and add tools for the work it doesn’t do: revenue recognition, consolidation, SaaS metrics and invoicing from your CRM.
ScaleXP connects to Xero (and to QuickBooks and Zoho Books) and automates the finance work that usually drives an ERP evaluation:
Xero stays your ledger. Nothing is migrated.

Excel-heavy journals reduced to a half-day job
“All my accrual and deferred revenue manual journals in Xero are now automated — ScaleXP reads invoices and bills directly, pushes entries through, and maintains a full audit trail of every change. What used to be a risky, Excel-heavy process is now a half-day job.”

Xero review
ScaleXP prepares the revenue schedules, accruals and prepayments from your Xero data, and the journals post once finance approves. It consolidates up to 50 entities across Xero, QuickBooks Online and Zoho Books, calculates 30+ SaaS metrics, and creates Xero invoices from HubSpot, Salesforce and Pipedrive deals. With only Xero to connect, customers are live within 1 week at most. Book a demo.

No. Xero is cloud accounting software covering the general ledger, invoicing, bills, bank reconciliation and financial reports. An ERP also runs operations such as inventory, purchasing and manufacturing in the same system. Xero connects to specialist apps for those areas instead of building them in.
Partly. Many companies build an ERP-style stack around Xero by adding specialist apps: inventory, CRM invoicing, revenue recognition, consolidation and reporting. For SaaS and services businesses this usually covers what they need, at a lower cost and faster than moving to an ERP.
When operational complexity, rather than finance reporting, is the bottleneck. Multi-warehouse inventory, manufacturing, complex procurement or a requirement for a single ERP system of record are the common triggers. If the pain is revenue schedules, a slow close or consolidation, automation around Xero is usually faster and cheaper.
Each Xero organization is a separate file, and Xero doesn’t produce consolidated group accounts with intercompany eliminations by itself. Groups either consolidate in spreadsheets or add a consolidation tool. ScaleXP consolidates several Xero organizations, and can combine Xero with QuickBooks and Zoho Books entities.
NetSuite implementation partners put a small company’s first year at roughly $50,000–$120,000 including implementation (BrokenRubik, September 2026). Adding ScaleXP to Xero is a monthly subscription with no data migration and tailored onboarding included. Current plans are on the pricing page.
How ScaleXP does this
ScaleXP connects to Xero to automate revenue recognition, deferred revenue, month-end journals and SaaS metrics, with finance approving every journal before it’s posted. See the Xero integration →
